Say Goodbye to January Jitters
Posted January 3rd, 2024 events, local events, things to do, winterJanuary is like opening the first page of a new book: it’s exciting and daunting all at once. Luckily, for Luminary residents, Baltimore is the perfect city to ring in the New Year and is home to so many wonderful places and events for members of the Luminary family to enjoy.
Live Performances to Lift You Up
In January, Baltimore will host live events that will make you laugh, lift you out of your seat to cheer, or have you nodding your head to the beat.
Trevor Noah, former host of the Daily Show, will be at the Hippodrome Theater in downtown Baltimore on January 13 to perform his comedy act laced with his signature wit and political humor. If you’re a fan of comedy, this is one you don’t want to miss.
For something a little more classical, on January 20, the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall will dazzle you with a Mozart Clarinet Concerto. Music is the language of the soul, and these performers are fluent.
Opera Baltimore also has a lot to offer the more classically inclined, but they do so with a twist. On January 25, they will host Thirsty Thursday At the Opera, blending magnificent opera performances with carefully selected drinks interspersed throughout the evening.
For a more modern music offering, the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University will host a Computer Music Department Recital, promising unique sounds and rhythms that will get you grooving. Doors open at 6pm and tickets are free!
Sometimes the best experiences involve not just listening to music but making it. The Roland Park Community Center invites you to join their Musical Improv & Songwriting night on January 3 at 7pm. No musical experience? No problem! This event is open to all levels of musical talent and promises to be a night of countless stories.
Witness the High-Flying Ravens
With the NFL season winding down, the Baltimore Ravens stand as one of the best teams in the NFL. Visit M&T Bank Stadium on January 7 to watch electric MVP-favorite Lamar Jackson take on the AFC North rival Pittsburgh Steelers. Cheer on the Ravens as they look to lock up first place!
A Winter Flurry of Culture
Baltimore is one of the cultural hubs of the US, offering countless avenues to experience art and history in exciting ways.
Edgar Allan Poe is one of Baltimore’s most prominent historical figures, and on January 19, Westminster Hall is offering a way to celebrate the esteemed writer while participating in a clever murder mystery. Bring some friends for a guided tour of Westminster Hall and to solve the mystery of who killed the Poe Toaster!
A tenet of more modern culture is the video game, and many Baltimore residents grew up with classic games, such as Duck Hunt and Pacman. On January 12, participate in the ultimate game night at the Maryland Science Center, enjoying your favorite classic video games and tabletop games with a sciency twist.
For something the whole family can enjoy, the Port Discovery Children’s Museum is having its Community Day on January 26, which means admission is just $10 a person! For this low rate, you get to explore three floors of open play areas and drop-in educational activities.
A key part of culture is art, and just like music, often the next experiences from art come from making it. That’s why the Walters Art Museum put together a drop-in Make and Mingle program for adults to create art, enjoy some coffee or wine, and socialize! The event takes place on January 4 and all materials will be supplied.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day
January 15 is a day to celebrate and reflect upon the teaching of one of America’s greatest figures: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This national holiday is the perfect time to take a step back and do some reading on what made this iconic leader so special and impactful.
A Winter Harvest
Just because the weather is cold, doesn’t mean farmers markets stop providing Baltimore residents fresh, delicious goods. The Johns Hopkins Hospital Farmers Market will take place on January 18 on Jefferson Street and will have delicious produce and treats to get you through the cold!
Winter Fun In the Comfort of Home
Don’t let the cold weather stop you from enjoying delightful winter activities, as Luminary is offering numerous events right in the comfort of your homd!
On January 5, map out your goals and dreams in a guided vision board creation from 4-6pm. Join members of your Luminary family in mapping out and manifesting a delightful future!
The next day, January 6, will let you get your zen on with a mid-day meditation and raw juice bar from 12-2pm in the Luminary yoga room. This is a perfect opportunity to take a break from January’s hustle and bustle.
The Luminary staff also knows how tough it can be getting up for a good breakfast in one of the coldest months of the year, so that’s why they’re offering not one, not two, but three grab & go breakfasts in January! Enjoy these morning treats in the Luminary lobby from 8-10am on January 8, 22, and 29.
Grab & go breakfasts are not the only opportunities to get food right at Luminary this month. On January 10, the building will be visited by the Top Nach food truck, a local staple serving up hot, delicious nachos.
Besides food, if there’s one thing that can unite a group of people, it’s board games. On January 22, enjoy some of your favorite board games with fellow residents from 2-4pm, a great opportunity to bond with your neighbors!
Another great way to bond is over a good book, and on January 28 at 1pm, Luminary will host a Book Club and PotLuck event that will combine engaging discussions with delicious food.
